Poppke and Volhynia

One of my Poppke grandfather’s possible birthplace is in Volhynia. A recent DNA connection showed a distant relationship with a similar surname from the area.  So it’s time to dig into the Volhynia connection.

What is Volhynia?

Volhynia is the name of a province that has been owned by several larger neighbors.  It currently belongs to Ukraine, but it’s historically been part of Russia (as Volhynia and as part of Russian Ukrainia) and part of Poland.

The Poland connection is important here because it was probably Polish when my German ancestors came here.  Unlike the German-Russians, the German settlers were not invited to settle barren steppes, they just moved here and created villages.  Because of this, the usual German-Russian sources don’t have much to say on Volhynia.

What’s up with the Poppke surname?

In the 1800’s, the main period I want to research, the major source of records were the church parish records.  So, you have German settlers traveling to an area with German churches, Polish administrators, and a history of writing with Cyrillic due to a history with Ukraine and Russia.

The only real constant with the Poppke surname is:

  • The beginning single consonant of P, but maybe a B
  • The next vowel – it’s been seen as a,e,i,o,u,oe, etc.
  • A P-K combination, either pk or ppk
  • The final vowel – a,e,o,ey, etc.

Here are current variations;

Poppke, Poeppke, Pueppke,, Pöppke, Pueppke, Puepke, Popke, Popkey, Popkie, Papke, Papkey, Pipke, Popka, Popko

Poppke DNA on Chromosome 1

Poppke Felchle DNA

I’m trying to find our Poppke grandfather’s family through DNA analysis.
We currently have four Poppke grandchildren tested and on GedMatch.com.
For Poppke elimination, we have a Felchle 2nd cousin and a 2nd cousin one removed.

These posts will look at the evidence one chromosome at a time.

For Chromosome 1, if you look just at the four Poppke grandchildren, there are several areas where one first cousin matches with one other first cousin. But nothing greater than that. On chromosome 1, the matches appear to be good with the Felchle family side.

In detail,

John Poppke family in Brooklyn, NY (unrelated, so far)

Hi, I’m going to be researching some unrelated Poppke families. I’m starting with this one because;
1. The guys were iron workers, similar to my immediate family.
2. I found a great will from 1912 for the family.
3. One of the men in the family was living in South Dakota (which is close to North Dakota).

The first two pieces I’m starting with are;
1. A will showing members of the family at various places in Brooklyn, NY, and elsewhere. The addresses listed were current on 3 Jul 1912.
2. The 1910 Federal Census for Brooklyn.

The will of John Poppke lists his son, John Poppke, living at 980 Greene Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.
6 July 1912
Wills Filed
John POPPKE, who died Dec. 13, 1911, left a personal estate of
$1,400. By will of April 27, 1891, all of the testator’s interest in
the firm of Poppke & Son, 21 Lawton street, is bequeathed to his son,
John F. POPPKE, of 980 Greene avenue, who is also named as executor.
The residue of the estate goes to his sons, the Rev. Herman POPPKE, of
Shoemaker, Tripp County, South Dakota; Edward POPPKE, of Three Bridges,
Hunterdon County, N.J.; Gustav W. POPPKE, of 343 Central avenue,
Brooklyn, and Emil POPPKE of 244 Kings Highway.

To tie the 1910 Census to a place, I found that Greene Ave is in Ward 25, Enumeration District 684:

http://bklyn-genealogy-info.stevemorse.org/Ward/1910.21.25.html

Based solely on the common place in Brooklyn, with no common dates, I’m going to connect these John Poppke in the will to this John Poppke;

In the 1910 Census;
